How to keep a day trip to Bishnupur temples budget friendly?

Abhishek Ganesan · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

Any ideas on how to visit the Bishnupur Terracotta Temples without breaking the bank? The temples are free to enter and open all day, so I could just walk around. I also saw Jor Bangla Temple only 1.5 km away and the Bishnupur Museum a short walk from there-maybe a quick stop between them? I’m based in Kolkata and would like to know the cheapest transport options to get there and back. Also, do you think staying near the temples, like at a place 1 km away, would save on accommodation costs?

If you’re staying overnight near the temples, Hotel Annapurna is only about a kilometre away and has good reviews for a 3 star price. From Kolkata the cheapest way is a local train to Bishnupur and then a shared auto or local bus to the temple complex. The auto fare to the temples is usually under ₹30, so you’ll save on both transport and lodging by staying there. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You could also take the local bus from the Bishnupur station straight to the temple area; the fare is about ₹30 and the ride takes only a few minutes. If you’re staying overnight, a room at Hotel Annapurna keeps you within a kilometre of the temples and usually costs less than a city hotel in Kolkata. It also puts you close to the museum and Jor Bangla, so you can hop between them without extra travel.

If you’re only doing a day trip, the train from Kolkata to Bishnupur takes about an hour and the ticket is around ₹200. From the station the local bus to the temple complex is another ₹30, and the walk to Jor Bangla is just a mile. If you stay overnight at Hotel Annapurna you’ll be less than a kilometre from the temples and the museum, cutting down on both transport and lodging costs. Do you have a preference for a single day visit or an overnight stay?

You could also grab a local bus from the Bishnupur station directly to the museum area it’s a short hop and the fare is similar to the temple bus. If you’re staying overnight, a room at Hotel Annapurna keeps you under a kilometre from everything, so you can walk to Jor Bangla and back without paying extra transport. Have you checked what days the museum is open? That might help you plan the best time to swing by.

The Bishnupur station bus that drops you right at the temple complex runs every 15 20 minutes after the first train. If you stay at Hotel Annapurna you can walk to Jor Bangla and the museum in a few minutes, so you’ll skip any extra bus fare. Have you checked the museum’s opening days?

If you’re planning a short stay, a room at Hotel Annapurna keeps you under a kilometre from the temples, the museum and Jor Bangla, so you can walk between them. The local bus from Bishnupur station to the temple complex is about 30 rupees, and the train from Kolkata to Bishnupur is roughly 200 rupees one way. This combo gives you the cheapest round trip and minimal extra transport.

Bishnupur Museum is open every day except Mondays, so if you’re planning a quick stop, aim for a weekday. A shared auto from the station to the temple complex is usually under 30 rupees, and from the temple you can walk to Jor Bangla and back without extra cost. Staying a kilometer away, like at Hotel Annapurna, keeps you within walking distance of all three sites and saves on nightly transport. Have you checked the museum’s exact opening hours for the day you plan to visit?

You might want to check the train schedule from Kolkata’s Howrah to Bishnupur the early morning train around 06:30 gives you plenty of daylight for the temples. After you arrive, the local bus to the complex runs every 15 20 minutes, so you’ll hardly wait. If you stay at Hotel Annapurna, you can hop back to the station in the evening without an extra bus fare. Have you looked at the museum’s opening hours for the day you plan to visit?

The Bishnupur Museum is closed on Mondays, so if you’re planning a weekday visit it’ll be open all day. If you stay a kilometer away, like at Hotel Annapurna, you can walk to the temples, Jor Bangla and the museum without extra bus fare. Do you think a short overnight stay would give you enough time to explore all three sites?

The train from Howrah to Bishnupur is the cheapest one way fare at about ₹200, and the local bus from the station to the temple complex costs only ₹30. If you stay a kilometer away, like at Hotel Annapurna, you can walk to Jor Bangla and the museum, saving the extra bus trips. A quick check of the museum’s opening hours for the day you plan to visit will help you slot the stop in between the temples.
