How many days should I spend in Chikmagalur on my first visit?

Siddhesh Kalita · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning my first trip to Chikmagalur and wondering how long to stay to cover the main sights. The town is famous for its coffee plantations and the nearest peak, Mullayanagiri, is only about 20 km away, while the Baba Budangiri hills are around 30 km. Since the place stays open 24 hours and there’s no entry fee, I could fit in a few days of trekking, coffee tours, and a quick visit to the wildlife sanctuary. Any recommendations on a minimum stay that still lets me enjoy the highlights?

A three day stay usually covers the main spots. Spend the first day exploring a coffee estate near the town, then head to Mullayanagiri for an early morning trek. On day two, visit the wildlife sanctuary in the morning and the Baba Budangiri hills in the afternoon. Finish with a relaxed evening at a local café or a short walk in the town’s market. If you want a comfortable base, consider staying at Hotel Aadrika.

You could add a half day to the third day to hit the coffee estates that open early. Many estates start their tours around 7 am, so you can finish the trek by noon and still catch a guided walk through the plantations before dinner. If you want a comfortable base, Hotel Aadrika is only a kilometre from the town centre and has good reviews.

If you’re short on time, a four day stay gives you a relaxed pace. Day one can be a coffee estate walk, day two the morning trek to Mullayanagiri, day three a half day visit to the wildlife sanctuary and the afternoon climb of Baba Budangiri, and day four a leisurely stroll through the town and a sunset at a local viewpoint. Staying at Hotel Aadrika keeps you close to the town centre and the main trekking routes.

A good rule of thumb is to give yourself at least four days if you want to avoid rushing. That lets you hit a coffee estate in the early morning, trek Mullayanagiri before noon, visit the wildlife sanctuary in the late morning, and climb Baba Budangiri in the afternoon. If you stay at Hotel Aadrika, you’re only a kilometre from the town centre and the main trekking routes, so you can drop by the estate or the sanctuary on short drives.

If you want to see both Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri without rushing, a four day stay lets you split the climbs and still fit in a coffee estate walk and a quick wildlife sanctuary visit. Staying a short distance from town, Hotel Aadrika keeps you within a kilometre of the main trekking routes, so you can drop by the sanctuary or the estate on a quick drive.

If you’re tight on time, try starting the Mullayanagiri trek at sunrise the path opens around 5 am and you can finish by mid morning. Afterward, a quick coffee estate walk that opens at 7 am fits nicely before dinner. Stopping at Hotel Aadrika keeps you a kilometre from both the town centre and the trekking routes. You could also slot a quick coffee estate walk in the early morning after the Mullayanagiri trek. Many estates open at 7am, so you can finish the climb by noon and then stroll through the plantation before lunch. If you stay at Mallika Sapphire, it’s just a short drive from both the town centre and the trekking routes, making those quick stops even easier.

You might want to leave a day for a late afternoon coffee estate walk after the Mullayanagiri trek; many estates open until 5 pm, so you can finish the climb by noon and still see the plantation before dinner. If you stay at Hotel Aadrika you’re only a kilometre from the town centre and the trekking routes, making that quick stop even easier.

If you only have two days, try a sunrise trek up Mullayanagiri on day one and finish at the coffee estate around noon, then head to the wildlife sanctuary in the late afternoon. On day two, start early at the Baba Budangiri hills, which is a 30 km drive, and finish the day with a relaxed walk around the town. Staying at Hotel Aadrika keeps you close to both the trekking routes and the town centre.
