How do we reach Rajgad Fort from Pune – best route for a couple?

Indrani Oak · 19 hours ago ·7 replies

We’re planning a short trip to Rajgad Fort and want to know the best way to get there from Pune. The fort is about 50 km from Pune city, and we’re wondering whether a cab from Swargate Bus Stand or a local bus would be more convenient for a couple. Also, what route is recommended to avoid traffic and reach the fort early for a sunrise view?

If you’re heading out early to catch the sunrise, the fastest way is to take a cab from Swargate and stay on the NH 48 route straight to the fort. The local buses leave from Pune Junction or Shivajinagar, but they stop at multiple villages and can add a half hour or more. A quick stopover at Mango Leaf Lake Resort in Gorhe Khurd gives you a good break before you climb the last stretch.

If you want to beat the main traffic, head out around 3 pm from Swargate on NH 48, then take the turn onto the road that leads straight to Gorhe Khurd. From there you’ll pass the Mango Leaf Lake Resort, which is a good spot for a quick coffee before the final climb. This detour keeps you on a less congested path and lets you reach the fort by sunrise. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re okay with a little detour, you can leave Pune around 2 pm and take the Pune Daund road (NH 48) until the Katraj roundabout, then turn onto the Katraj Gorhe Khurd road. It’s a narrower, less trafficked path that keeps you off the main NH 48 corridor. You’ll still pass the Mango Leaf Lake Resort, but the drive is smoother and you’ll hit the fort a bit earlier for the sunrise.

You could also head out around 2:30 pm from Swargate, stay on NH 48 to the Katraj roundabout, then take the Katraj Gorhe Khurd road. It’s narrower and usually less congested. You’ll pass Mango Leaf Lake Resort, where a quick coffee break is easy, then hit the fort a bit earlier for that sunrise view.

If you’re heading out around 2:30 pm, stay on NH 48 to the Katraj roundabout, then take the narrower Katraj Gorhe Khurd road. It’s usually less busy and keeps you on a smoother drive. The route passes Mango Leaf Lake Resort, where you can grab a quick coffee or snack before the final climb. This should get you to the fort before sunrise. Since you’re a couple, a private cab from Swargate can get you directly onto NH 48 and then onto the Katraj Gorhe Khurd road. If you want to beat the morning rush, aim to leave around 2:30 pm so you pass the Mango Leaf Lake Resort for a quick coffee before the final climb. This detour keeps you off the main NH 48 and should have you at the fort before sunrise. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.
