How do I reach Viper Island from Port Blair and what transport options exist?

Tariq Gogoi · 1 month ago ·21 replies

I’ll be arriving at Veer Savarkar International Airport and then heading to Port Blair. From there, I understand taxis are available, but I’m not sure if that’s the only way. Are there ferries or other public transport options to Viper Island? Also, do I need to book anything in advance or can I just hop on a cab once I reach Port Blair?

From Port Blair the most common way is a taxi straight to Viper Island. There aren’t regular ferry services listed for that leg, so you can just flag a cab once you arrive. If you’d rather avoid a taxi, you could ask at the Port Blair information desk for any local boat operators, but a taxi is the simplest and usually inexpensive.

If you’re coming straight from the airport, the quickest way is to take a taxi from Port Blair to Viper Island most locals do the same. The fare is usually around ₹2000 2500 depending on time of day. There are no scheduled ferries on that route, so you’ll need to flag a cab on arrival. If you prefer a boat, ask the information desk for any local operators that run a short trip; they can arrange a private or shared boat for you.

You can also take a short local boat from Port Blair’s jetty; a few operators run a shared trip to Viper Island each day. The schedule isn’t fixed, so it’s safer to ask the information desk when you arrive. If you prefer a private ride, flag a taxi they’ll take you straight to the island and you won’t need to book anything in advance.

A local boat can get you to Viper Island, but the timing is loose. Operators from Port Blair’s jetty usually run a shared trip once or twice a day, often in the late morning or early afternoon. Since the schedule isn’t fixed, it’s best to ask the information desk on arrival for the next departure time. If you prefer a guaranteed ride, flag a taxi they’ll take you straight to the island without any need to book ahead.

If you want to try a boat instead of a taxi, the jetty in Port Blair usually has a few shared trips each day. The first one is around 10 am and the last about 4 pm, but the times can shift. It’s best to ask the information desk right after you land for the next departure. That way you can avoid a taxi if you prefer the water route.

If you’re not in a hurry, you can ask the Port Blair information desk for the next shared boat to Viper Island. They usually run a trip around mid morning and again in the afternoon, but the exact time can shift. The boat will take you directly from the jetty to the island, and you won’t need to book anything in advance.

If you want a quicker water option, the jetty in Port Blair has a small ferry that departs roughly once a day around noon. The boat usually takes about 30 minutes to reach Viper Island, and you can catch it on the spot without pre booking. Just ask the information desk for the next departure time.

You can also catch a local boat from the jetty right next to the Port Blair bus stand. The operators usually depart once a day, around noon, and the ride takes about 30 minutes. No pre booking is needed just ask the desk for the next departure when you arrive. If you prefer a guaranteed slot, a taxi is still the quickest option.

The jetty is right next to the bus stand, only a short walk from the information desk. If you prefer a quicker water ride, the shared boat usually leaves around 10 am and again near 3 pm, but the exact times shift, so check with the desk on arrival. A taxi is still the fastest way and you can flag one straight away. If you stay in Port Blair, the Lemon Tree Premier Vijayawada is a solid choice for a comfortable base.
