How can I avoid crowds on a day trip to Gandikota Fort?

Ved Ballal · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a quick day trip to Gandikota Fort and heard it gets crowded in the afternoon. The fort is open all day and entry is free, so I want to get there early. What route would you recommend to reach the fort before the crowds hit, and should I start from the nearest bus stop or take a cab from Tirupati Airport? Also, any tips on handling the midday heat while exploring the 13th‑century ruins?

A good way to beat the afternoon rush is to leave early from the bus stop near the Tirupati bus depot. The 45 minute ride to the fort starts before the sun hits the hill, so you’ll be exploring the 13th century walls while it’s still cool. If you prefer a quicker hop, a cab from Tirupati Airport takes about 35 minutes and lets you avoid the bus schedule. Bring a light hat, plenty of water, and try to stick to the shaded paths near the main gate during the hottest part of the day.

A quick way is to catch the early 6 am bus from the Tirupati depot; the 45 minute ride keeps you out of the midday heat. If you’re already near the airport, a cab takes about 35 minutes and you can hop off right at the base of the hill. Pack a small water bottle, wear a brimmed hat, and start at the main gate where the shaded walkways are easiest to navigate before the sun climbs. If you need a place to stay after, the Alexander Luxury Hotel in Anantapur is about 27 km away and has good reviews.

If you’re heading from the Tirupati bus depot, catching the 45 minute 6:00 am bus keeps you cool until the fort opens. From the airport, a 35 minute cab drop right at the base saves you waiting. Pack a lightweight scarf or bandana to shade your face, and consider stopping for a quick break at a nearby tea stall on the way up many locals recommend a small, cool spot under the banyan tree just before the main gate. If you plan to stay overnight, the Alexander Luxury Hotel in Anantapur is a convenient option a short drive away.
