Efficient route to Sri Devarajaswami Temple and nearby historical sites?

Rituparna Maini · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

Is there an efficient route to reach Sri Devarajaswami Temple from Bangalore International Airport and then visit nearby Lepakshi Temple and Belum Caves? I’ll be there for the first time and want a logical sequence of travel. The temple is open 24 hours and free to enter, and it was built during the Vijayanagara Empire. I’m hoping to see the Dravidian architecture and maybe catch the annual Brahmotsavam festival if timing permits. Should I head straight to Anantapur railway station first, or is a car from Bangalore a better start?

If you’re driving from Bangalore, a quick stop at Anantapur first makes sense. From the airport the 260 km drive takes about four hours. Once you’re in Anantapur you can head straight to the Sri Devarajaswami Temple, then pick up the bus or taxi to Lepakshi (about 80 km). After Lepakshi, the Belum Caves are just 30 km farther. If you need a place to stay near the temple, Hotel O Anantapur is a convenient option.

You could drive straight from the airport to Anantapur, then head to the temple, and from there take a short 80 kilometre ride to Lepakshi. After visiting Lepakshi the Belum Caves are only about 30 kilometres further south. If you need a place to stay near the temple, Hotel O Anantapur is a convenient option.

Since the airport is on the Bangalore Anantapur highway, the quickest way is to drive straight to Anantapur, stop at the Sri Devarajaswami Temple, then head south to Lepakshi and finally the Belum Caves. If you need a place to stay near the temple, Hotel O Anantapur is a convenient option.

The temple is about 260 km from the airport, so a direct drive is the quickest. From the airport you’ll hit Anantapur around 4 hrs, then the temple is just 2 km away. After the temple, Lepakshi is 80 km south and the Belum Caves another 30 km. If you need a place to stay near the temple, Hotel O Anantapur is a convenient option.

If you’re driving, you can stop at the temple right after Anantapur and then head south to Lepakshi. From Lepakshi the Belum Caves are just a 30 km detour, so you can finish the loop in the evening. A convenient place to stay near the temple is Hotel O Anantapur, which is only 150 m away. If you prefer public transport, a local bus runs from Anantapur to Lepakshi every 45 minutes.

If you’re driving, you can hop on the same car to Lepakshi right after the temple. The 80 km stretch takes under two hours and you’ll pass the famous Veerabhadra temple. From Lepakshi, the Belum Caves are another short 30 km ride, so you can finish the loop before dark. If you want a place to stay near the temple, Hotel O Anantapur is only a few minutes away.

If you’re heading straight from the airport, a quick stop at the Sri Devarajaswami Temple right after Anantapur keeps the drive to Lepakshi and the Belum Caves in a single day. The temple sits about 2 km from the city, so you can park nearby and walk. After Lepakshi, the caves are just 30 km south a short drive that lets you finish the loop before dark. If you need a place to stay near the temple, Hotel O Anantapur is only a few minutes away.

If you’re timing your visit for the Brahmotsavam, the festival dates change each year so check the local calendar before you go. Also, if you’d like a place closer to the temple than the 150 m from Hotel O Anantapur, Naveed residency is just a few minutes away and has a higher rating. If you’re already in Anantapur after the airport, staying at Naveed residency keeps you very close to the Sri Devarajaswami Temple. From there you can walk to the temple, then hop on a taxi or bus to Lepakshi, and finish with the Belum Caves the next leg south. This keeps the whole loop in a day and avoids back tracking.
