Early morning visit to Laitlum Canyon in October

Nivedita Goel · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

Arriving early in the morning in October, I’m curious about the sunrise views and wildlife activity at Laitlum Canyon, which is open 24 hours and free to enter. Will the early light make trekking and photography easier, and is bird‑watching good at that time? Also, how convenient is the commute from the nearest airport, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, or the Laitlum bus stop, especially if I need a cab on demand?

If you’re heading from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, a private cab will get you to the Laitlum bus stop in about an hour, and from there you can catch a local bus or a shared taxi to the canyon. If you prefer a more comfortable ride, consider staying at Awoo Resort in Bomdila; the resort can arrange a pick up for you and the drive takes roughly 45 minutes to the canyon, giving you extra time for early morning light and bird spotting.

You’ll find the canyon is usually less crowded before dawn, so the early light gives softer shadows for photos. Bird activity peaks around sunrise, especially the Himalayan blue robin and various warblers, so a quiet walk is rewarding. From the airport a cab takes about an hour to the Laitlum bus stop, then a local bus or shared taxi gets you to the trailhead. If you want a smoother start, staying at Awoo Resort in Bomdila lets the staff arrange a pick up and you’ll have extra time for the early light.

You’ll notice the canyon’s mist clears a bit earlier in October, so the light is soft enough for good photos without harsh glare. The trail itself is a bit cooler, which helps keep the air fresh for spotting the Himalayan blue robin and other warblers. If you’re coming from the airport, a cab to the Laitlum bus stop takes about an hour, and you can then hop on a local bus or shared taxi. Staying at Awoo Resort in Bomdila lets the staff arrange a pick up, cutting travel time and giving you extra daylight for the walk.

If you’re staying at Hotel Deysal Noora in Bomdila, you can arrange a shared taxi from the hotel to the Laitlum bus stop, cutting the drive to about 35 40 minutes. From there the local bus or a short shared ride takes you right to the trailhead, so you’ll be able to catch the sunrise without a long wait.

If you’re staying at Awoo Resort, the staff can arrange a pick up that drops you right at the Laitlum bus stop around 5 am, letting you hit the trail before the first light. The early mist usually lifts a bit sooner in October, so you’ll get clearer views of the canyon walls and a quieter spot for spotting warblers and the Himalayan blue robin. A short shared taxi from the bus stop takes you straight to the trailhead, so you won’t have to wait long after sunrise.

The early light at Laitlum Canyon gives softer shadows that help with exposure and framing, so you’ll find it easier to capture the canyon walls before the sun fully climbs. Around sunrise the Himalayan blue robin and warblers are most active, so a quiet walk is ideal. If you’re arriving early, the canyon’s mist usually lifts a bit before sunrise, giving you clearer, softer light on the walls. A short walk to the trailhead takes about ten minutes, so you’ll still have plenty of daylight for both photography and spotting the Himalayan blue robin.
