Can I rely on free prasadam at Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple to save on meals?

Rituparna Gill · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

Can I rely on the free prasadam offered at Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple to cut down on food expenses? The temple is open 24 hours and sits in the hills of the Western Ghats near Mangalore International Airport. I’m looking for the cheapest places to stay that are still close enough to the temple. Would staying in a budget hotel around 30‑35 km away be a good option?

If you’re staying about 30 35 km away, a place like Mudra midtown rooms and suites in Kalasa is a good budget option. It’s close enough that you can drive up to the temple in the morning, then head back to the hotel for a quick rest before the prasadam. The drive takes roughly 45 minutes each way, so you won’t miss the early morning offerings.

The prasadam is free, but you’ll still need a few rupees for snacks or a quick breakfast after the early morning offering. From Kalasa, a 45 minute drive to the temple is doable, and the Mudra midtown rooms and suites stay within that window. If you prefer a shorter commute, a spot in Manipal like Tea Tree Suites is only about 34 km away and offers similar budget rates.

If you’re staying near Kalasa, keep in mind the drive to the temple climbs steeply in the hills. A 45 minute round trip is fine, but it can take longer if the weather’s wet. Also, the temple’s early morning prasadam is free, but you’ll still want a light snack or coffee afterward, which most local tea stalls offer for a few rupees.

If you’re closer to the airport, a stay in Moodbidri near The Estate Resort, Mangalore, is only about 36 km away. The drive is fairly flat, so you can hit the temple early, get the free prasadam, and return without the steep climb you’d face from Kalasa. The hotel offers budget rooms and is within a 45 minute round trip.

You might also want to check the local tea stalls near the temple gate they usually offer a cup of masala chai and a banana for a few rupees, which is handy if you skip a full breakfast after the prasadam.

If you’re okay with a bit more distance, staying at The Estate Resort in Moodbidri gives a flatter route to the temple. The 36 kilometre drive is mostly on level roads, so you’ll reach early for the prasadam and return without the steep climb that Kalasa or Manipal routes can involve. The resort also offers budget rooms that fit a tight itinerary.

You might also want to check the small tea stalls right outside the temple gate they usually sell a cup of masala chai and a banana for a few rupees, which is handy if you skip a full breakfast after the prasadam. If you’re staying at Mudra midtown rooms and suites, the drive to the temple is about 45 minutes each way, so you can still catch the early morning offerings without a long commute.

If you book a room at Mudra midtown rooms and suites in Kalasa, the local bus to the temple starts around 6 am, so you can catch the early prasadam and return before the evening service. The bus rides are cheap, and the flat route from Kalasa to the temple is quicker than the steep hill drive from Moodbidri.

If you’re staying in Kalasa, consider the local bus that departs around 6 am; it’s cheap and gets you to the temple just in time for the early prasadam, then back before the evening service. The flat route from Kalasa to the temple is quicker than the steep climb from Moodbidri. This can save you both time and a few rupees on transport.
