Budget plan for an early morning trip to Raigad Fort

Rachel Shah · 4 weeks ago ·17 replies

Arriving early morning from Pune, I want to hit Raigad Fort before the crowds. The fort is open all day and entry is free, so I can start around 5 am and still get good light for photos. What are the cheapest ways to get there from Pune or Mumbai, and are there any affordable guesthouses or homestays near the fort that I can book for the night? Also, is it worth staying in a nearby town like Mahabaleshwar or Mulshi to keep costs down?

You could hop on a local bus from Pune to the Raigad gate; the state runs a 5 a.m. service that drops you near the fort and is cheaper than a taxi. After the climb, staying in Mulshi keeps costs low The Green Gate Resort Mulshi offers decent rooms and is only about 27 km from the fort. It’s a short drive back for the next day’s hike.

From Mumbai you can catch the early state bus that leaves around 4 a.m. from the CST bus stand and drops near the Raigad gate, just like the Pune route. It costs a few rupees more than a Pune bus but saves a taxi ride. After the hike, The Green Gate Resort Mulshi is a budget friendly option a short drive away; it offers simple rooms and is only about 27 km from the fort. If you prefer a quieter spot, staying in a nearby village instead of Mahabaleshwar keeps the nightly rate lower. Have you checked if any homestays in Mulshi offer shared rooms?

The Green Gate Resort Mulshi is a solid budget pick; it’s only about 27 km from the fort and offers basic rooms that keep the nightly rate low. If you want an even cheaper option, look for homestays in the nearby Mulshi village they often share a room and the price is a few rupees less than the resort. Also, the early state bus from Pune leaves around 4:30 a.m. and drops you near the Raigad gate, so you can hit the fort before crowds and still have time to catch the sunrise.

If you’re staying in Mahabaleshwar, the drive to the fort is about 42 km and the road is well paved, so a 45 minute ride is typical. The Evershine Resort & Spa is a popular budget choice there and offers free Wi Fi, which can help you upload your sunrise shots quickly. If you prefer a quieter base, Mulshi village homestays keep rates even lower and are just a 30 minute drive from the fort.

If you’re looking for a budget spot after the hike, the juSTa Rudra Resort & Spa in Kolad is only about 26 km from the fort. It offers basic rooms and a free breakfast, which can save you a bit on meals. The drive from Kolad to the fort is a scenic 45 minute ride, so you’ll still get to the sunrise photo spot on time.

If you’re staying after the climb, the Green Gate Resort Mulshi is a solid budget pick it’s only about 27 km from the fort and offers basic rooms. The resort also has a small restaurant, so you can grab a quick bite before heading out for sunrise. If you’re willing to stay a bit farther out, Kolad’s juSTa Rudra Resort & Spa is only 26 km from Raigad. It offers basic rooms and a free breakfast, so you can save on meals after the hike. The drive back is a quick 45 minute ride, and the resort’s location keeps you out of the busier towns while still being close to the fort.

A quick way from Pune is the 4:30 a.m. state bus that drops you near the gate; the same schedule runs from Mumbai’s CST. After the climb, staying at the Green Gate Resort Mulshi keeps costs low and you’re only a 30 minute drive from the fort. If you want an even cheaper stay, look for homestays in Mulshi village that share rooms.

If you want a cheaper base than Mahabaleshwar, check a homestay in Mulshi village. They often share rooms and the price can be a few rupees less than the Green Gate Resort. The drive from Mulshi to Raigad is just about 30 minutes, so you’ll still hit the fort early and have a quiet place to rest.

If you end up staying in Kolad, the next day’s bus back to Pune usually leaves around 9 a.m. from the Kolad bus stand, which is convenient after a night at the juSTa Rudra Resort. Does anyone know if the state bus from Kolad to Pune stops near the Raigad gate, or would you need a separate local ride?

If you’re staying in Mulshi village instead of the resort, a few homestays let you share a room for a few rupees less. They’re usually just a 10 minute walk from the Mulshi bus stop, so you can hop on the 4:30 a.m. state bus and still reach the Raigad gate before crowds. The extra time you save on transport can be used for a relaxed breakfast back at the homestay.
