Best time to trek Kodachadri and see Mookambika Temple?

Dnyanesh Goel · 1 month ago ·21 replies

I’m planning a trekking trip to Kodachadri and also want to visit the nearby Mookambika Temple and Hidlumane Waterfalls. Kodachadri sits in the Shimoga district at 13.8667°N, 74.8333°E and is open 24 hours. The temple is just 10 km away and the waterfalls are another 15 km from the peak. Based on the best‑time list, October to February seems ideal, but I’m not sure how the weather affects the trek itself. How long does the trek usually take, and are there any seasonal tips for combining all three sites?

A typical trek to Kodachadri takes around 6 - 8 hours if you start early, so plan to leave before noon. In winter the trails are cooler and clearer, but keep an eye on sudden cold fronts. A good route is to visit the Mookambika Temple first, then hike up, and after descending head to Hidlumane Waterfalls - the 15 - km stretch is doable in a single day. Bring rain gear just in case, even in the dry season.

In winter the trail is usually clear but can get misty early in the morning, so start early to avoid fog. The 15 km stretch to Hidlumane Waterfalls can be done after the descent, but bring a light jacket because temperatures drop at night. If you’re staying near the base, consider a place like Hotel Ambika International Byndoor for easy access to the temple and the trek.

You might want to start at the temple in the morning, then head straight for the trek. The ascent usually takes about 4 5 hours, and the descent about 3 4. In October January the trail stays clear, but early mornings can be misty; bring a light jacket for the cooler evenings. After you come down, a short drive to Hidlumane Waterfalls is doable before sunset. If you need a base, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor gives easy access to the temple and the trailhead. A good tip is to start the trek right after visiting the temple in the early morning, so you’re on the trail before the mist lifts. In October February the trail is usually dry, but you can still see a light drizzle in the afternoon; pack a quick dry jacket and a rain poncho just in case. If you plan to stay overnight, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor gives you easy access to the temple and a comfortable base for the trek.

You’ll find that the descent is usually faster than the ascent, so you can finish the trek by early afternoon. In October February the trails stay relatively dry, but mist can linger in the early hours start the hike right after the temple so you’re on the ridge before the fog lifts. After you come down, a drive of about 15 km takes you straight to the waterfalls, giving you a chance to cool off before sunset. If you need a place to stay near the base, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is a convenient option.

You could start at the temple around sunrise, then head straight up the ridge. The ascent takes about 4 to 5 hours, descent 3 to 4, so you’ll finish by early afternoon. In October February mornings can be misty, so bring a light jacket and a quick dry rain poncho. After you come down, a 15 km drive to the waterfalls is doable before sunset, and staying at Hotel Ambika International Byndoor keeps you close to both the trailhead and the temple.

The Hidlumane Waterfalls tend to be at their most spectacular in November when the monsoon runoff is still high, but the trail is still dry enough for a safe drive. If you want to stay overnight near the base, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor gives easy access to both the temple and the trekhead, so you can hit the summit early, visit the temple at sunrise, and finish the descent before sunset.

A good trick is to start the trek right after the temple so you’re on the ridge before the mist lifts. In October February the trail stays dry, but early mornings can be foggy, so bring a light jacket. After the descent a quick 15 km drive gets you to Hidlumane Waterfalls before sunset perfect for a cool dip. If you need a base, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is close to both the temple and trailhead. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re aiming to hit the waterfalls after the descent, keep in mind that November still gets a good monsoon run off, so the falls look their best then. A quick 15 km drive from the base takes you to the falls before sunset, and staying at Sai Vishram Beach Resort gives you a nice base close to the trailhead and the temple.

The waterfalls look their best in late November when the monsoon runoff is still high, so if you can push your trek a few days later you’ll get a good splash before the dry season sets in. Also, the 15 km drive after the descent is usually flat and quick, so you can finish the trek by early afternoon and still make it to the falls before sunset. If you need a base near the trailhead, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is a convenient option. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re aiming for the waterfalls after the descent, keep in mind that the 15 km drive is fairly flat, so you can reach Hidlumane by early evening even on cooler days. A light waterproof jacket works well for both the misty morning trek and the sudden afternoon drizzle that can appear in October. If you need a base near the trailhead, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is a convenient option. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re heading straight from the temple to the ridge, try leaving around 6 am. The trail is usually clear then, but the mist can linger until about 8 am, so a light jacket is handy. After you descend, the 15 km drive to Hidlumane is flat and quick usually under an hour so you can hit the falls before sunset. If you need a base, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is a convenient option.

If you’re hitting the falls after the descent, bring a small water bottle the trail can be dry in October and early November. The water level at Hidlumane drops noticeably after the monsoon, so the falls look less dramatic then.

You might also consider stopping for a quick break at the temple’s tea stall before heading up many trekkers find the fresh coconut water helps with the steep sections. In late October the ridge can be a bit dusty, so a light dust mask or a bandana works better than a heavy jacket. If you need a nearby base, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is a convenient spot close to both the trailhead and the temple.

You might also time the trek so you reach the summit before noon; the ridge is usually dry then and the trail gets cooler as the day goes on. After the descent, a quick 15 km drive to Hidlumane is flat and often takes under an hour, giving you plenty of daylight to enjoy the falls before sunset. If you prefer a nearby base, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is close to both the temple and the trailhead.

If you hit the falls after the descent, note that the water level drops noticeably in late October and early November once the monsoon run off ends. A quick 15 km drive from the trailhead usually takes under an hour, so you can still catch the falls before sunset. If you need a base near the temple and the ridge, Hotel Ambika International Byndoor is a convenient option.
