Best route to Chorabari Lake when passing through Kedarnath and nearby sites to check out?

Varun Bhasin · 1 week ago ·17 replies

I’m heading through Kedarnath and want to squeeze in a quick visit to Chorabari Lake. Since the lake sits at about 3,900 m and is open 24/7, I’m wondering which road is easiest to reach it from the Kedarnath Bus Stand. Also, are there any other nearby attractions I should consider on the same drive, like the Kedarnath Temple or Vasuki Tal, that would fit into a short detour?

The quickest way from the Kedarnath bus stand to Chorabari Lake is to head east on the Kedarnath Khatling road. It’s a single lane track that takes about 30 40 minutes and you’ll pass the Vasuki Tal viewpoint along the way. If you have a little extra time you can detour back to the Kedarnath Temple before heading back toward the lake; the temple is just a short walk from the bus stand and the same road leads to both spots. A good place to stay after the trek is Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag, which is only about 22 km from the lake.

You could also head north from the bus stand on the Kedarnath Khatling road, then turn left toward the village of Khatling. That route takes you past the Kedarnath Temple on the way to Chorabari Lake and gives a quick view of Vasuki Tal from the same stretch. If you need a place to rest afterward, the Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag is only about 22 km away.

From the bus stand you can take the Kedarnath Khatling road eastwards. It’s a single lane track and you’ll hit the Vasuki Tal viewpoint about 15 km in before the lake. If you’re short on time, a quick detour to the Kedarnath Temple is only a few hundred metres from the bus stand, then head back toward Chorabari. After the trek you could stay at Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag, just over 20 km away. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re short on time, a quick detour to the Kedarnath Temple is only a few hundred metres from the bus stand, so you can hit the temple first, then head east on the Kedarnath Khatling road to Chorabari Lake. The same stretch gives a good view of Vasuki Tal about 15 km in. After the trek you could stay at Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag, just over 20 km away.

If you’re short on time, a quick stop at the tea stall near the lake is worth it they serve local yak butter tea that’s a nice pick up before the descent. After the trek, the Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag is only about 22 km away and offers a decent base for the next leg of your trip. You can take the Kedarnath Khatling road heading east from the bus stand. The track is single lane but the view of Vasuki Tal comes around 15 km in, so you can see it without detouring. If you only have a quick window, stop at the Kedarnath Temple first just a short walk from the stand then head east to the lake. After the trek, a convenient place to rest is Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag, about 22 km away. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re already heading east on the Kedarnath Khatling road, you can turn right at the first bend to hit Vasuki Tal before reaching Chorabari. The lake itself is a quick 10 minute drive from there, and the tea stall near the shore is a nice spot for a quick yak butter tea before you head back. After the trek you might want to stay a night at Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag, which is just over 20 km away and gives you a good base for the next leg of your trip.

You could take the Kedarnath Khatling road east and stop at the small tea stall near the lake they serve yak butter tea that’s a quick pick up before heading back down. If you have a few extra minutes you can also see the small waterfall that spills into Chorabari from the side road; it’s a nice quick detour that doesn’t add much time.

You could leave the bus stand heading east on Kedarnath Khatling road, then turn right at the first bend to hit the small waterfall that spills into Chorabari just a quick side drive that adds a splash of scenery. After the lake, a short walk back to the bus stand puts you near the Kedarnath Temple again if you want a quick shrine visit. You could walk the short 200 meter stretch from the bus stand to the Kedarnath Temple, then head east on the Kedarnath Khatling road to Chorabari. The same drive gives a quick view of the Vasuki Tal viewpoint and a side track to a small waterfall that feeds the lake. After the trek, a convenient overnight spot is Himalayan Comforts in Rudraprayag, about 22 km away.
