Best photography spots at Chidiya Tapu for a day trip?

Jatin Shukla · 1 week ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a day out to Chidiya Tapu and want to capture the best shots. Since it’s open all day and entry is free, I can start early and finish before sunset. I’ve heard the sunset views are spectacular and there are clear paths that lead to good bird‑watching and photography angles. Does anyone know which spots are most photogenic, especially near Mount Harriet National Park which is only 15 km away?

You might want to head to the ridge that runs north of the beach near the beachside promenade. From there you get a sweeping view of Mount Harriet’s silhouette as the sun dips. The trail that loops around the park’s lower slopes offers a good angle for bird shots, especially near the mangrove patches where the kingfishers like to perch. A good spot is the viewpoint just before the ridge turns into the forested slope of Mount Harriet. From there you can frame the beach and the mountain in one frame and catch the kingfishers on the mangrove fringe. If you’re staying in Visakhapatnam, the Super Hotel O Suryabagh Near Jagadamba Theater gives easy access to the trailheads. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

A good early spot is the small clearing just before the ridge turns into the forested slope of Mount Harriet. From there you can frame the beach, the ridge, and the mountain all in one shot. The mangrove fringe near the trail gives a nice foreground for kingfisher shots. The best early morning spot is the small clearing right where the beach meets the ridge, just before the trail dives into the forest. From there you get a wide view of the ocean, the ridge, and the distant silhouette of Mount Harriet. If you’re staying in Visakhapatnam, the Super Hotel O Suryabagh Near Jagadamba Theater is a convenient base. Have you thought about timing your walk to catch the tide receding for a clearer shoreline shot?

You might want to time your walk so the tide has just pulled back that gives a clearer shoreline and a nice wet sand reflection in the foreground. From the ridge you can also frame the beach, the ridge line, and the distant Mount Harriet all in one shot, and the mangrove fringe there is great for catching kingfishers. If you’re staying near Visakhapatnam, the Super Hotel O Suryabagh Near Jagadamba Theater is a convenient base.

If you’re timing the walk with the tide, try arriving a bit earlier than the low tide mark the sand is slick and reflects the sky, giving a dramatic foreground. A quick stop at the small clearing just before the ridge turns forested lets you frame the beach, ridge line and Mount Harriet all in one shot. If you need a nearby base, the Super Hotel O Suryabagh Near Jagadamba Theater is close to the trailheads. Have you checked the tide chart for that day?

A good time to hit the ridge is just after sunrise when the light is soft on the wet sand. From the small clearing you can shoot a low angle shot that captures the ridge, the ocean and the distant Mount Harriet all in one frame. Try heading for the small clearing just before the ridge drops into the forested slope of Mount Harriet. The angle there lets you frame the beach, the ridge line, and the mountain all together, and the mangrove fringe nearby gives a nice foreground for kingfisher shots. If you can get there around sunrise, the sand is still wet and the light is soft great for a low angle shot of the ridge and Mount Harriet. Check the local tide chart for that day; arriving just after low tide gives a clearer shoreline and a wet sand reflection that adds drama. A quick check of the tide schedule for the day can help you time the walk so the sand is still wet and reflective just after low tide. That wet sand gives a nice foreground for the sunrise shots you’re after. If you’re staying near Visakhapatnam, the Super Hotel O Suryabagh Near Jagadamba Theater keeps you close to the trailheads.

You could try timing the walk so you arrive just after low tide; the wet sand then reflects the sky and gives a nice foreground. Since Mount Harriet is only about 15 km away, a quick drive from Visakhapatnam will get you to the ridge by mid morning, letting you capture both the beach and the mountain before the sun gets too high. Have you checked the local tide schedule for that day?

A good extra angle is the small dune just north of the ridge it gives a low angle shot of the sea, the ridge and Mount Harriet all in one frame. From there you can catch the kingfishers perched on the mangroves with a shallow depth of field.
