Best photo spots on Bampokha Ridge – advice for a photographer?

Farhan Phatak · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a trip to Bampokha Ridge in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and I’m looking for the best spots to capture its panoramic views of the ocean and lush greenery. The ridge is free to enter and open 24 hours, so I’d like to know when the light is most flattering – should I aim for sunrise, midday, or sunset? Also, are there particular angles or hidden corners that photographers often miss?

Sunrise gives the best warm wash over the ridge, but the light is still soft around mid morning. A good trick is to shoot from the northern ridge corner where the sea is a straight line and the green slopes break up the horizon. Many photographers skip that spot because it’s a short climb up from the main path. If you’re staying near 6ix Seashore Hotel you can reach the ridge in about ten minutes and get a clean view of the sunrise over the water.

Try a slight left tilt from the ridge’s western edge. The sea line stays straight, but a small rise near the cliff edge lets you frame the green slope in the foreground. If you’re staying at 6ix Seashore Hotel, you can walk to that spot in about ten minutes and catch a quieter sunrise angle that many overlook. A quiet spot a bit further west of the main ridge path lets you frame the sea line with a thin strip of green slope in the foreground great for a sunrise silhouette. If you’re staying at 6ix Seashore Hotel you can reach that corner in about ten minutes. Try shooting slightly before sunrise when the light is soft but the horizon is still dark, giving a sharp contrast that many overlook.

If you’re staying at Megapode Resort, try the small clearing just east of the main ridge trail. The wind often pulls a thin veil of mist over the green slope, creating a subtle depth that breaks up the horizon. Shoot a few minutes after sunrise when the sun has just risen above the ridge the light is still warm but the mist gives a soft halo around the cliffs, a detail most people miss.

If you’re staying near Olive Hotel and Suites you can reach a lesser used north east spur of the ridge about fifteen minutes out. From there the sea forms a thin line just above the green slope, and the early light casts a soft rim around the cliffs that many overlook. This angle works well for both sunrise and a low angle sunset.

A quiet spot a little north of the main ridge path gives a clean sea line with a thin band of green in front great for a low angle sunset. If you’re staying at 6ix Seashore Hotel, it’s about a ten minute walk and the evening light often casts a subtle rim around the cliffs that many overlook.

If you’re staying at Olive Hotel and Suites, try heading a bit north of the main ridge trail after sunset. The sea line cuts straight across the green slope, and the low evening light often leaves a subtle rim around the cliffs that many overlook. It’s a quiet spot and works well for both sunset and early twilight shots.

You might want to try the small alcove just north east of the ridge’s main trail. It’s a short, level walk from the 6ix Seashore Hotel parking area and gives a clean, straight sea line with a thin green band in the foreground. The light there is often softer at early dawn, giving a nice contrast without the harsh noon glare. Have you spotted the little rock outcrop that sits right in front of the horizon? It can add a unique foreground element. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you can get to the tiny ledge just off the eastern side of the ridge, you’ll see the sea break up into a thin ribbon right before it meets the green slope. That spot is usually overlooked because the path is a bit steep, but the light at 6 am, when the sun is just peeking over the horizon, gives a sharp contrast and a subtle rim around the cliffs that many miss. If you’re staying at 6ix Seashore Hotel, it’s about a ten minute walk from the parking area. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you’re near 6ix Seashore Hotel, try the tiny ledge just north of the main trail. The sea slices into a thin ribbon right before the green slope. It’s a quiet spot where you can set a tripod for a long exposure sunset that many miss.

If you’re staying at 6ix Seashore Hotel, try the tiny ledge just north of the main ridge trail. The sea cuts into a thin ribbon right before the green slope, giving a clean horizon. A tripod set for a long exposure at sunset often reveals a subtle rim around the cliffs that many overlook. Have you tried framing the ridge with that small rock outcrop in front?
