Arriving late afternoon at Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary-what’s the plan?

Rehan Kaur · 3 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m flying in to Balasore and will get there around 4 pm. The sanctuary is open 24 hours, but I’m curious about the history and whether there are any guided tours that start later in the day. Established in 1984 as part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve, Kuldiha covers about 272.75 sq km and is a key corridor for migrating elephants. I’d like to learn about its origins and any visitor facilities that are available after 4 pm. Also, is it worth taking a quick detour to the nearby Chandipur Beach (≈50 km) before heading into the forest?

Since the sanctuary is open all night, you can walk in after 4 pm, but the official guided walks usually start early in the morning. It’s worth asking the ranger station on arrival for any late evening visits or night watching opportunities. The beach at Chandipur is roughly fifty kilometres away, so a quick detour could be doable if you have a car and a few hours before heading into the forest. If you’re staying near Balasore, Hotel Ayush International is a convenient base.

The ranger station at the sanctuary opens until about 8 pm, so you can request a short evening walk or a night watching slot if you arrive at 4 pm. If you have a car, heading to Chandipur first is doable; the beach is about 50 km away and you can catch a sunset before the drive back to Balasore. A quick stay at Hotel Ayush International keeps you close to the entrance for a late return.

You can ask the ranger station about a short evening walk; they usually allow a slot until about 8 pm. If you’re looking for a quick beach break, Chandipur is only about 50 km away and you can catch a sunset before heading back to the sanctuary. Staying a few hours at Hotel Ayush International keeps you close to the entrance for a late return.

Kuldiha was carved out of the larger Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve in 1984 to protect the migration corridor. The ranger station has a small visitor centre with a map and a brief exhibit on the sanctuary’s founding. If you arrive at 4 pm you can ask for a short evening walk; the staff usually allow a slot until about 8 pm. After that, a quick sunset at Chandipur is doable, and staying a few hours at Hotel Ayush International keeps you close to the entrance for a late return.

The sanctuary’s visitor centre shows a timeline of the 1984 split from the larger Mayurbhanj Reserve and explains why the 272 sq km corridor is critical for elephant migration. If you arrive at 4 pm, the ranger station is open until 8 pm and can arrange a short evening walk. Afterward you could head to Chandipur for a sunset view, then return to the sanctuary or stay at Hotel Ayush International for easy access. You can ask the ranger station for a short evening walk until about 8 pm; they usually run a guided slot then. The visitor centre has a neat timeline showing the 1984 split from the larger Mayurbhanj Reserve and explains why the 272 km corridor is key for elephant migration. After the walk you could head to Chandipur for sunset, then drop back to the sanctuary or stay a few hours at Hotel Ayush International for easy access.

If you’re heading straight to the sanctuary, the ranger office also has a small exhibit on the 1984 split from the Mayurbhanj Reserve, showing old maps and photographs. After an evening walk you could stop at Arpita Beach Resort for a quick sunset before returning to Balasore. If you need a place to rest before the drive back, Hotel Ayush International is just under five kilometres from the entrance. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

The ranger station has a small visitor centre that shows a timeline of the 1984 split from the larger Mayurbhanj Reserve and a brief exhibit on the sanctuary’s founding. It also offers a small refreshment stall that stays open until about 8 pm, so you can grab a light snack before heading out on an evening walk. If you’re looking to time your visit, you could finish the walk around sunset and then head to Chandipur for a quick beach stop before returning to Balasore.
