What’s the cheapest way to spend a day in Fontainhas?

Manav Dandekar · 2 days ago ·8 replies

I’m staying in Panaji and want to explore Fontainhas on a tight budget. Since the heritage zone has free entry and is open 24 hours, walking around the narrow streets is the cheapest option. Do you know which cafés or street stalls offer good food without breaking the bank?

A good spot for cheap eats is the small café on the corner of Fontainhas that serves traditional Goan fish thali for around ₹200. The street stall near the Church of St. Cajetan is famous for its fried banana fritters and coconut water, both under ₹50. If you want a quick bite with a view, the terrace café at Hotel Arcadia offers a small menu of local snacks at reasonable prices.

You might also try the stall on Rua de Santa Catarina that sells “batá” a spicy rice cake for under ₹80. It’s right next to the old courthouse and you can grab a cup of freshly ground coffee from the same corner. If you’re looking for a sit down without breaking the bank, the cafeteria at Hotel Arcadia offers small plates like fried plantain and coconut rice at reasonable prices.

If you’re looking for a quick bite that’s still cheap, the street stall near the old courthouse serves the local “batá” rice cakes for under ₹80. A nearby corner also sells freshly ground coffee that pairs well with the banana fritters. For a sit down option that won’t break the bank, check the cafeteria at WelcomHeritage Panjim Pousada Hotel they offer small plates like fried plantain and coconut rice at reasonable prices.

Try the stall on Rua da Luz that sells fresh coconut ice cream for just a few rupees great to cool down after a long walk. If you want a sit down snack, the cafeteria at Hotel Arcadia serves a small fish curry plate around ₹250, which is cheaper than most cafés yet still local. Have you checked the corner near the old courthouse for the banana fritters?

Try grabbing a banana fritter from the stall right next to the old courthouse early in the morning the crowd is lighter and the price stays under ₹90. It pairs nicely with a cup of freshly ground coffee from the same corner.
