Best season to visit Janardhana Swamy Temple while passing through Varkala

Siddhesh Kalita · 2 hours ago ·5 replies

The Janardhana Swamy Temple in Varkala is open 24 hours, so timing isn’t a problem for a quick visit. It’s only about 1 km from Varkala Beach, so you can stroll there before or after. Historically, the temple is over 2000 years old and attracts pilgrims and tourists alike. When would be the best time to drop by if I’m just passing through? And should I stay overnight to catch any evening rituals?

If you’re just passing through, the temple is best visited in the late afternoon when the light is softer and the crowds thin. The evening pooja starts around sunset, so staying a few hours after the beach walk lets you catch that. If you want to linger, the Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff is only a kilometer away and gives a quiet spot to rest before the rituals.

If you’re only in Varkala for a day, arriving around 4 pm lets you catch the sunset pooja and still have a couple of hours to stroll the beach. The temple’s 24 hour access means you can return later for the evening rituals, but most visitors find the 5 6 pm slot the most peaceful. If you want a quiet spot to rest before the ceremony, consider staying at Villa Luca By Elixir Cliff, which is less than a kilometre away.

You can drop in any time because the temple is open 24 hours. If you just want a quick stop, visiting around midday lets you avoid the peak crowds that come in the late afternoon. If you’re staying a bit longer, plan to be there around sunset so you can see the evening pooja and the lamps lit on the steps.
