How to plan a day trip from Zero Point to Nathula Pass and Chopta Valley?

Paramjit Pillai · 1 hour ago ·2 replies

I’m staying in Gangtok and want to spend a day visiting Zero Point, then head to Nathula Pass and Chopta Valley. Zero Point is about 15 km from the Indo‑Tibetan border and 55 km from Nathula Pass, while Chopta Valley is only 10 km away. What’s the most efficient route to cover all three in a day, and should I start early to make the most of daylight?

Start early around 6 am. Drive from Gangtok to Zero Point first it’s the shortest leg, about 15 km, so you’ll get there before the sun peaks. Then head to Nathula Pass, 55 km from Zero Point; the road runs straight through the pass, so you’ll cover that stretch in roughly an hour. From Nathula, a quick 10 km drive takes you to Chopta Valley. If you’re staying at Oro Montana, Ranka you’ll be very close to the start and can get back to the hotel by sunset. This sequence keeps the drive continuous and lets you enjoy each spot during daylight.

A straight line route works best: start at around 5:30 am, head to Zero Point first (15 km), then turn right for the 55 km stretch to Nathula Pass, and finally a quick 10 km drive to Chopta Valley. If you’re staying at Oro Montana, Ranka you’re only a few minutes from the start, so you’ll get back before dark. Leaving early also gives you the chance to catch the sunrise over the Himalayas.
