Best month to visit Safa Shahouri Masjid in Goa to avoid the heat

Sayantani Thakur · 1 month ago ·22 replies

I’m planning a trip to Goa mainly to explore the historic sites and was curious about the best time to visit Safa Shahouri Masjid. The mosque is a 16th‑century landmark that’s open 24 hours, and it’s located in Ponda. I want to avoid the peak summer heat but still see the architecture in good light. Would November through February be the best period for this?

November to February is a solid choice because the temperatures dip to the low 20s and the evenings are cooler, which helps you see the stone carvings without the glare of midday sun. If you want a base close to Ponda, Treebo Rock Valley is only about four kilometres away and offers easy access to the mosque. You might also consider visiting early in the morning when the light is softer and the site is less crowded.

You can also visit Safa Shahouri Masjid after sunset. The evening light is softer and the temperature is usually below 20 °C, so the stone details stand out better. If you stay at Treebo Rock Valley it’s only a short drive, and you can leave the car early to catch the mosque in the twilight. Have you considered a night visit?

If you’re aiming for the best light on the stone carvings, try a morning visit around 9 am when the sun is low but not harsh. The mosque’s open air courtyard catches the early light nicely, and you’ll avoid the midday glare that can wash out the details. A short drive from Ponda takes you to Treebo Rock Valley, which is only about four kilometres away.

You could also try a late afternoon slot, around 4 pm. The sun is lower, shadows highlight the stonework, and the temperature usually drops below 22 °C. Staying at Treebo Rock Valley keeps you just a short drive from Ponda, so you can head straight to the mosque after dinner without a long commute.

You could also check the mosque’s evening prayer time the light around sunset often casts deeper shadows on the stonework, making the carvings pop. If you’re staying at Treebo Rock Valley, you can leave the car around 5 pm to catch that twilight effect before the temperature rises again.

If you’re looking for a quiet spot to catch the mosque’s carvings in good light, consider arriving a bit earlier in the day around 8 am. The sun is low, shadows are soft, and the temperature is still under 20 °C. Staying at Treebo Rock Valley gives you a short drive and a convenient base for a morning visit.

November to February is usually the sweet spot. If you’re staying near Ponda, the 3 star Treebo Rock Valley is only about 4 km away and gives you quick access to the mosque. A late afternoon visit around 4 pm can give you cooler temps and deeper shadows on the stonework, which many find easier to appreciate than a midday tour.

A quick tip: try visiting after sunrise, around 7:30 am. The low angle light will highlight the stonework without harsh glare, and the temperature is still under 20 °C. If you’re staying near Ponda, Treebo Rock Valley is just a four kilometre drive, so you can head straight to the mosque in the morning and return before the heat rises.

You could also try a late afternoon visit around 3 pm the sun is lower, the stonework gets nice shadows, and the temperature usually stays under 22 °C. Since the mosque is open all night, you could stay at Treebo Rock Valley and come back for a twilight walk after dinner. This way you’ll catch both the warm afternoon light and the cooler evening glow.

A good tip is to check the mosque’s prayer schedule; the evening prayer around 5 pm usually brings a cooler breeze and softer light, making the stonework easier to read. If you’re staying near Ponda, Treebo Rock Valley is only a short drive away, so you can head straight for the twilight visit after dinner.

You could also bring a lightweight scarf or shawl to keep cool while walking the courtyard; the mosque’s open design means you’ll feel the breeze even in early evening. If you’re staying at Treebo Rock Valley, the drive is short, so you can head out right after dinner for a twilight walk when the light softens the stonework.
