Quick activities for a stopover at Nagarjuna Hills?

Aniket Mahajan · 2 days ago ·8 replies

Nagarjuna Hills stays open all day and you can hike the trekking trails that offer panoramic valley views. The ancient Buddhist ruins and a nearby stupa are free to visit and make for great photo ops. If you have a few hours, the area is also good for a short picnic or a quick wildlife watching walk. Do you know if the local monasteries are accessible during a short stopover?

Most monasteries in the Nagarjuna Hills area open to visitors from morning until late afternoon, but hours can vary. If you’re only stopping for a few hours, a quick walk to the nearby monastery on the ridge is usually possible. A convenient base is the Hotel Bodhi Retreat By Basotel, which is just a few kilometers away and can give you a good idea of the local timings.

You might want to check the local schedule for the Sakyamuni Monastery on the ridge it usually opens around 9 a.m. and closes by 5 p.m. If you’re only there for a few hours, the walk from the nearby Hotel Bodhi Retreat By Basotel is straightforward and takes about 20 minutes. The monks often welcome visitors during the afternoon prayer session, so you could catch a short ceremony if the timing lines up.

If you’re only there for a short time, the Sakyamuni Monastery on the ridge opens at 9 a.m. and stays until 5 p.m. You can reach it from Hotel Bodhi Retreat By Basotel in about 20 minutes on foot. The monks usually hold a brief afternoon prayer around 3 p.m., which is a nice chance to see a local ceremony without a long stay.

You can also visit the small Chaitya Buddha Stupa on the hilltop; it’s open all day and the path from the ridge is a quick walk. If you’re only there for a few hours, the Sakyamuni Monastery on the ridge opens at nine and stays until five, so you’ll have plenty of time to see a brief afternoon prayer. If you only have a short window, you could also stop by the small Chaitya Buddha Stupa on the hilltop; it opens all day and the walk from the ridge is quick. From Hotel Bodhi Retreat By Basotel you can reach it in about 15 minutes on foot, and there’s a nearby tea stall where locals serve fresh chai great for a quick break before heading back.
