Family trip to Durga Devi Temple – March or October?

Chinmay Prasad · 3 days ago ·10 replies

I’m planning a family visit to Durga Devi Temple in Uttarakhand. The shrine is open 24 hours and entry is free, so we’re flexible with timing. It’s about 25 km from Rishikesh and 50 km from Haridwar, which could make a good day‑trip. Should we go in March or in October for a better experience? Also, is it worth adding a quick stop at Rishikesh or Haridwar while we’re there?

If you’re looking for cooler weather and less crowds, March is a good choice temperatures are mild and the river is still clear. October, after the monsoon, has lush green hills but can be humid. A quick stop at Rishikesh is worth it for a morning Ganga swim or a stroll through the ashram area, and the ArtBuzz Rishikesh hostel is a convenient base if you stay overnight.

October’s post monsoon humidity can make the walk to Durga Devi a bit sticky, but the hills look especially green and the Ganga is calm. In March the weather is cooler and the crowds thinner. If you’re staying overnight, the ArtBuzz Rishikesh hostel is a convenient base and you can drop by Haridwar in the afternoon to catch the evening Ganga Aarti before heading back.

If you’re aiming for a quieter walk to the shrine, a late March visit keeps the trail dry and the crowds thin. In October the hills burst green after the rains, but the humidity can make the hike a bit sticky. Since you’re already near Rishikesh, staying at ArtBuzz Rishikesh gives you easy access to the Ganga Aarti in the evening before heading back.

A good way to keep the drive short is to leave Rishikesh early, around 6 am, so you reach Durga Devi by mid morning before the trail gets steamy in October. If you’re staying overnight, the ArtBuzz Rishikesh hostel is only about 2.3 km from the river and gives easy access to the evening Ganga Aarti. This keeps the day relaxed and lets you enjoy both the temple and the river without long waits.

If you’re staying overnight, the ArtBuzz Rishikesh hostel is only a short walk from the Ganga and gives easy access to the evening aarti. In October the trail is greener but can be sticky, so plan a quick morning visit to Rishikesh for a swim and then head to Durga Devi before the afternoon heat picks up.
