Best Konkani dish in Pawas compared to nearby beach towns?

Rituparna Gill · 5 days ago ·13 replies

I’m passing through Pawas and want to know what local Konkani dish is a must‑try. How does it stack up against what you’d find at nearby places like Velneshwar Beach or Ganpatipule? Is there a quick street‑food spot that’s worth a short detour? I’d appreciate any recommendations on food that’s genuinely local and easy to grab on the go.

A good local bite in Pawas is the fish curry with coconut milk, usually served in a banana leaf with a side of steamed rice. It’s lighter than the richer coconut based curries you’ll find at Velneshwar Beach, and the same as the fresh fish at Ganpatipule. A quick stall near the railway station sells the curry and a handful of spicy banana leaf vadas, perfect for a quick grab before heading out. If you’re staying nearby, the Kokanwadi Resort has a small on site eatery that re creates the same style of curry.

A good quick bite right on the main road near the station is the “Konkani vada” a crispy potato fritter served with a tangy tamarind chutney. It’s lighter than the coconut based curries you’ll see on the beach, but still packed with local spice. If you have a few extra minutes, the stall also offers a small bowl of fresh coconut water that’s perfect for a quick refresh before heading out.

There’s a small stall just off the main road that sells a spicy “Pawas fish patty” a thin, crispy coating on a fresh fish fillet, served with a quick lime coriander chutney. It’s lighter than the coconut curries at Velneshwar and gives a different texture. If you’re staying near the station, the Kokanwadi Resort’s on site kitchen also offers the same patty in a larger portion.

If you’re only stopping for a quick bite, try the fish curry stall right next to the railway platform. It’s lighter than the coconut curries you’ll find on the beaches and comes with a small bowl of fresh coconut water. A nearby option is the Kokanwadi Resort kitchen, which serves a similar curry in a larger portion if you have a few extra minutes.
