Weekend trip to Manimahesh Lake – how to fit it in 48 hours?

Rehan Kaur · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a quick 2‑day visit to Manimahesh Lake in October, but I only have a weekend. The lake is at the base of Mount Kailash and opens 24 hours with free entry. I’d like to see the lake, the nearby Chaurasi Temple Complex (1 km away) and maybe a short trek to Gauri Kund (8 km). I can get a cab from Bharmour bus stand. What’s the best way to schedule everything in such a short time?

If you leave early Saturday morning from Bharmour, you can reach Manimahesh by mid morning. Spend a few hours at the lake, then head to Chaurasi Temple right next to the lake, about a 10 minute walk. On Sunday, start the trek to Gauri Kund around 9 am to avoid the midday heat; it takes roughly 3 4 hours round trip. After returning, you could stay at Shree Guest House in Dharamshala for a comfortable rest. This keeps the itinerary tight yet covers all the highlights.

If you want to catch the sunrise at the lake, start even earlier than Chinmay suggests a 4 am cab from Bharmour gets you to Manimahesh by 7 am. After the temple walk, you can head straight to the Gauri Kund trailhead; the first 2 km are fairly flat and you’ll reach the kund by mid morning. Return around 3 pm and grab a quick dinner before heading to Dharamshala. Staying at Shree Guest House gives you a comfortable base and easy access to the town’s cafés.

You could leave Bharmour around 3 pm on Friday so you reach Manimahesh by sunset, then head straight to the Chaurasi Temple for a quick walk. On Saturday, start the Gauri Kund trek at 6 am to beat the heat, it takes about 3 4 hours round trip. Return by early afternoon, grab dinner, and then drive back to Dharamshala. Staying at Shree Guest House gives you a comfortable base for the next day.

You might want to bring a light jacket for the early morning trek, as it can be chilly near the lake even in October. Also, check if there’s a parking spot at the lake before you head to Chaurasi Temple sometimes the area gets busy on weekends.

You might also want to check the parking situation at the lake before you leave Bharmour. Some weekends the parking lot fills up early, so arriving a bit earlier than the usual 4 am cab can save you a scramble. If you end up staying overnight, Shree Guest House in Dharamshala is a convenient base and is only about 31 km away.

A tip that’s often overlooked is the parking layout at the lake. The main lot fills up by mid morning, so if you can get a cab a bit earlier than the 4 am slot, you’ll snag a spot before the crowds. Also, the trail to Gauri Kund starts right off the main path from the temple, so you can loop back to the lake area after the trek without retracing your steps.

If you’re staying at Shree Guest House, you can catch a cab from Bharmour around 3 pm on Friday, get to the lake by sunset, then head straight to the Chaurasi Temple for a quick walk. On Saturday start the Gauri Kund trek at 6 am, it takes about three four hours round trip, and you’ll return in early afternoon to enjoy dinner before heading back to Dharamshala.

You might want to arrive early enough to secure a spot in the main parking lot at Manimahesh; it usually fills by mid morning on weekends. If you catch a cab a bit before the 4 am slot, you’ll have a better chance of parking close to the lake and the Chaurasi Temple. After the trek back, you can head straight to Shree Guest House for a relaxed evening. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

If you can get a cab a little earlier than 4 am, you’ll likely find a spot in the main parking lot before it fills up. That gives you a short walk to the lake, then a quick 10 minute walk to the Chaurasi Temple, and you’ll be ready to hit the Gauri Kund trail without backtracking. After the trek, you can head straight to Shree Guest House for a relaxed evening.

If you can squeeze a cab an hour before 4 am, you’ll secure a spot in the main lot and avoid the late morning rush. After the trek, heading straight to Shree Guest House gives you a relaxed evening with easy access to Dharamshala’s cafés.

You might also consider leaving Bharmour at 3:30 pm on Friday instead of 4:00 pm. That gives you a few extra minutes to park before the lot fills up, and you can still catch the 6 am start for the Gauri Kund trek on Saturday. If you’re staying in Dharamshala, Shree Guest House is just over 31 km away and offers a comfortable base for the weekend.

You might want to bring a refillable water bottle and a light snack for the Gauri Kund trek; the trail has no shops and the 8 km walk can be a bit dry in October. Also, if you arrive before 4 am you’ll likely find a spot in the main parking lot, which helps keep the morning schedule tight.

A tip that hasn’t come up yet is to bring a small folding chair or blanket; the lake’s shore can be a bit uneven and having something to sit on after the trek makes the rest of the day easier.
