Family day trip to Donmotul from Guwahati – transport and activities?

Priya Singh · 2 weeks ago ·17 replies

We’re staying in Guwahati and want to take the whole family to Donmotul. It’s open all day and free to enter, but we’re not sure how far it is from the city or how to get there with kids. Do you know if the cab service from Guwahati is reliable for a 50‑km round trip, and what activities are best suited for a family with children? Also, would October be a good month for a visit?

Donmotul is about 50 km from Guwahati, so a round trip cab takes roughly 1.5 2 hours each way. Local taxis usually run that distance and the roads are in decent shape, but it’s wise to book a driver in advance and agree on a fixed rate. For kids, the waterfall area is great for short walks and a splash in the stream, and the surrounding forest trails offer easy nature spotting. October is still warm and the monsoon rains have usually receded, making the scenery lush but the trails manageable. If you’re staying nearby, the Cygnett Inn Imperial in Tezpur is a convenient base for day trips.

A local taxi company usually offers a fixed rate for the round trip, and many drivers are familiar with the route to Donmotul. If you stay at the Cygnett Inn Imperial in Tezpur, they can arrange a pick up for you. For kids, the picnic spot near the waterfall is a good place to let them run around, and the shallow stream is safe for a quick splash. October’s temperatures are mild and the trails are still clear after the monsoon. Do you think the kids would enjoy a short nature walk before heading back?

A quick tip for the kids is to bring a small water bottle and a snack bar the walk to the waterfall is only about 10 minutes from the parking and the stream is shallow enough for a safe splash. If you stay at Cygnett Inn Imperial, the staff can arrange a pickup and give you the exact route to avoid any detours. October’s mild temperatures mean the trails are still clear after the monsoon, so it’s a good month for a family outing.

If you’re staying at Cygnett Inn Imperial, ask the front desk to arrange a pick up; the staff can give you a map and suggest the best time to leave so the traffic on the NH 27 is light. Bring a light rain jacket just in case October can still have sudden showers, but the trails are usually clear after the monsoon. Kids often love spotting the small stone cutting rocks near the stream, which add a little adventure to the walk. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You could also consider a shared taxi from Guwahati’s main station; they usually charge a flat fee for a 50 km round trip and have drivers who know the route. If you stay at Cygnett Inn Imperial in Tezpur, the front desk can arrange a pickup and give you a map of the quickest path. In October the rainfall has usually tapered off, but a light rain jacket is still handy for the short walk to the waterfall. Kids often love spotting the small stone cutting rocks near the stream, which adds a bit of adventure. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

Since you’re already in Guwahati, a quick 50 km drive to Donmotul takes about an hour each way. If you book a private cab from the city, most drivers stick to a fixed rate and keep the route straight along NH 27. For families, the short 10 minute walk from the parking to the waterfall is ideal kids can splash in the shallow stream and spot the small stone cutting rocks that add a bit of adventure. In October the monsoon is usually over, but a light rain jacket is handy just in case. If you’re staying at Cygnett Inn Imperial, ask the front desk for a pick up and a map of the quickest path.

If you’re staying at Cygnett Inn Imperial, ask the front desk for a quick map of the parking spot at Donmotul it’s close to the trailhead, so the kids can start the walk right away. The area also has a small play corner with a few swings that keeps them entertained while you enjoy the view. October’s dry spell usually leaves the trail clear, so it’s a safe time to go.

You might want to stop by the small picnic spot just before the waterfall there’s a shaded bench area with a few swings that keeps the kids busy while you take photos. You might want to leave early, say around 6 or 7 a.m., so you hit Donmotul before the NH 27 traffic ramps up. The parking lot is right next to the trailhead, so you can start the walk straight away and keep the kids engaged with the shallow stream and the small stone cutting rocks they can spot.
