Day trip from Raja Raja Narendraswamy Museum: what nearby spots should I visit?

Indrani Swaminathan · 4 weeks ago ·17 replies

I’m planning a day out from the Raja Raja Narendraswamy Museum in Vijayawada and want to make the most of the local area. The museum is open 24 hours and free for everyone, so I can start early and then head to some nearby sights. A short drive takes me to the Undavalli Caves (about 8 km) and Prakasam Barrage (5 km), while a bit farther out I could see Kanaka Durga Temple, Gandhi Hill or Victoria Museum, all within 12 km of the museum. Would anyone recommend a quick route that covers a few of these spots without spending too much time in traffic?

A quick loop could be: start at the museum, head north to the Prakasam Barrage first it’s only 5 km and you’ll see the Godavari crossing early. Then drive west to the Undavalli Caves, about 8 km away, and spend a half hour exploring the rock cut carvings. After that, head back east to the city centre and finish at Gandhi Hill, which is under 12 km from the museum and offers a nice panoramic view of Vijayawada. This keeps travel time short and gives a mix of river, cave and hilltop sights.

You could add a quick stop at the Gandhi Hill viewpoint after the Prakasam Barrage. It’s only a few minutes away and gives a great 360 view of the city and Godavari. If you have a bit more time, a short detour to the Victoria Museum on the way back is worth it the exhibits are compact and you can finish before the afternoon traffic picks up.

You could finish the loop at the Gandhi Hill viewpoint, then head back toward the city and stop at the Victoria Museum. It’s only a few minutes from Gandhi Hill and has a compact collection of local history that fits in a quick visit. If you need a place to grab a coffee or rest, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is just under 300 m from the museum entrance. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.

You might want to stop at the small park right next to the Prakasam Barrage. It’s a quick walk from the bridge and gives a nice break before heading to the caves. After the caves, if time allows, a quick detour to the Gandhi Hill viewpoint before heading back gives a good mix of river, rock art, and city panorama.

You could also swing by the Gandhi Hill viewpoint right after the Prakasam Barrage the road to the hill is straight and you’ll get a quick 360 view before heading back. If you need a quick coffee break, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is only 300 metres from the museum entrance and has a nice terrace overlooking the city. This way you stay within the 12 km radius and avoid heavy traffic.

If you’re up for a quick coffee break, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is only 300 metres from the museum entrance and has a terrace overlooking the city. It’s a nice spot to stretch before heading to the Prakasam Barrage or the Undavalli Caves.

If you want a quick taste of history and scenery, start with the Prakasam Barrage, then head to the Undavalli Caves. After the caves, a short drive to Gandhi Hill gives a panoramic city view before you return to the museum. On the way back, you could stop for a coffee at Capital O Siddartha Grand, which is only about 300 metres from the museum entrance.

A quick stop at the small park beside the Prakasam Barrage gives a nice break before heading to the caves. After the Undavalli Caves, you could head straight to Gandhi Hill for the panoramic view and then finish back at the museum. If you need a quick coffee, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is only 300 metres from the museum entrance.

If you have a bit more time after the caves, a quick detour to the Gandhi Hill viewpoint gives a 360 degree view of the city and the Godavari. From there you can head straight back to the museum, saving a back track. If you’d like a quick coffee break before you leave, the Capital O Siddartha Grand is just a 300 metre walk from the museum entrance and has a nice terrace overlooking the city.

If you have a little extra time after the caves, a quick detour to the Victoria Museum on the way back gives a nice snapshot of local history in a compact space just a short drive from Gandhi Hill and still within the 12 km radius.

If you only have a few hours, you could skip the Gandhi Hill and head straight to the Undavalli Caves after the Prakasam Barrage. The caves are about 8 km away and you can spend a quick 30 minute walk inside the rock cut temples before returning to the museum. On the way back, a stop for coffee at Capital O Siddartha Grand just 300 m from the museum entrance lets you rest before heading home.

If you’re short on time, consider stopping at the small park beside Prakasam Barrage for a quick break before heading to the Undavalli Caves. After the caves, a straight drive to Gandhi Hill gives a panoramic view, and then you can finish back at the museum. If you want a coffee spot, Capital O Siddartha Grand is only a few hundred metres from the museum entrance.
