Quick activities at Nandankanan Lake when passing through Odisha

Mohit Mahadevan · 1 month ago ·21 replies

Just passing through Bhubaneswar and heard about Nandankanan Lake. With only a few hours, what quick activities can I enjoy there? I know it’s part of the zoo and has boating, but are there other things like picnicking spots or photo ops? Also, is it better to visit during the cooler months or any specific time of day?

The lake area has a small pavilion with benches where you can sit and watch the boats. The lawns around the perimeter are good for a quick picnic if you bring a blanket. Early morning, around 6 7 am, the light is soft and the air cooler, which makes for great photos of the sunrise over the water. If you’re staying nearby, Hotel Midland Yard is only a short walk from the entrance.

If you only have a few hours, try a quick paddle on the lake early in the morning when the light is soft. Afterward, walk along the perimeter lawns where you can stretch out a blanket and people watch. The pavilion offers a good spot for photos of the water and the surrounding trees. If you’re staying nearby, the Hotel Midland Yard is only a short walk from the entrance.

You can also stroll the 1 km walking path that circles the lake it’s lined with mature banyan trees and offers good bird watching spots, especially early evening. If you have a few minutes, bring a small picnic blanket and sit on the lawn near the pavilion; the sunset light over the water makes for nice shots. For a quick refreshment you could grab a snack at the nearby kiosk before heading back.

The 1 km path around the lake is lined with mature banyan trees, so you’ll spot kingfishers and herons early evening. If you’re hungry, the small kiosk near the pavilion sells fresh coconut water and local snacks. And if you want a quick break after the boat ride, the lawn right next to the pavilion is a popular spot for a short picnic.

You might also spot a few herons near the shore if you walk the 1 km path after the boat ride. A quick stop at the pavilion kiosk gives fresh coconut water and local snacks good for a quick energy boost before heading back. If you have a bit more time, the lawn near the pavilion is ideal for a short sit down, especially in the late afternoon when the light is warm. Is there a particular time you’re planning to visit?

If you’re heading straight from the zoo, the pavilion’s kiosk is the quickest spot for a coconut water break before you head back. The lawn right outside the pavilion is shaded by banyan trees and works well for a quick picnic or a few minutes of bird watching, especially around late afternoon when the light is warm. If you’re staying nearby, Hotel Midland Yard is just a short walk from the entrance.

If you’re only stopping by for a quick break, the pavilion kiosk is the fastest way to grab fresh coconut water and a handful of local snacks. It’s right beside the benches, so you can refuel and then hop on the 1 km trail around the lake for a shaded walk under the banyan canopy. This spot is especially nice if you head there in the early afternoon when the light is warm but not too harsh. If you’re staying nearby, the Hotel Midland Yard is only a short walk from the entrance. TravelIndiaDeals may earn a commission if you book through this link.
